Nearly four years after their tragic killing, troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered the remains of two personnel murdered in 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding in Imo State.
Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew were abducted along the Ubaha–Orsu axis by suspected IPOB/ESN elements at a time when they should have been preparing to unite their families in celebration. Instead, their journey ended in a brutal killing that left colleagues, friends, and many Nigerians shaken.
Linus, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, had devoted years to military service. Gloria, still in active duty, was known for her discipline and quiet strength. Despite being stationed miles apart she in Sokoto, he in Makurdi their bond endured. Their planned wedding was to mark a new chapter. It never came.
For years, the search for their remains continued in the background, driven by a military tradition that does not forget its fallen. That search reached a turning point on April 24, 2026, when troops of 82 Division, working with other security agencies, carried out a targeted operation in the area where they were last seen.
The mission was met with resistance. Armed elements launched an ambush and followed up with sustained attacks, attempting to halt the troops’ advance. The soldiers pushed through, repelling the assaults and securing the area.
Their persistence paid off. Shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel were located and carefully excavated. The remains have since been recovered and will undergo forensic examination, with DNA tests to confirm their identities.
Military authorities say steps are underway to reach the families, ahead of burial rites that will be conducted with full military honours, an acknowledgement of service, sacrifice, and a life cut short.
Their deaths, like many others in the South East, reflect the enduring toll of insecurity in the region, where attacks on civilians and security personnel continue to leave deep wounds. Even so, the recovery of Linus and Gloria brings a measure of closure and a solemn promise that they will not be forgotten.
